Navigate through a pristine wilderness area or through an urban jungle, learn all about the landscape that surrounds you and your team. You already outperform, outwit and outplay your competitors, now let's see how you measure up to your fellow workmates! This is your one chance to participate in a unique event. Ever wonder if you could find your way back to civilization if you were dropped off in the middle of nowhere? When you complete this event, you will walk away with the skills and confidence to know you could be a survivor!

Orienteering was originally created by the Swedish army to teach its soldiers how to navigate in the wilderness. The Adventure Teamâ„¢ has adapted it into an exercise that challenges team members to utilize many different types of information and skills to form an overall strategy, which is efficient and best suited to their individual talents. Your aptitude for cooperation, innovative problem solving and creativity will all be tested in this challenging and entertaining event.

How it works: The participants first receive their Team Bandanas. Each team member will typically learn one skill (map reading, area landmarks, flora, compass reading, GPS, Team Leader). Once the skill-learning period is complete, the participants will regroup in their respective teams and take 10 minutes to establish an overall course strategy. The teams must navigate to various checkpoints on a map, and then take a creative picture, including the elements described in their clue sheet.

Discussion:

  • Strategy: How well did your team establish an overall course strategy? Did you stick with the same strategy throughout the entire exercise? Did you change it along the way?
  • Communication: How did each team member handle his/her role and responsibilities? How well did the team members communicate between each other?
  • Teamwork: Why do you think this exercise challenged your ability to work together successfully as a team? What is the one thing your team could have done to be more effective?
